But on the other hand, it's just a movie, and there's only one true reason for a big budget movie based on a true story to change the true story: money. People nowadays are more likely to buy into this sort of story? they shoe horn it in. No agenda, not about feminism, not about empowerment, not about PC culture: just about what they think based on their numbers and testing will sell. If being PC sells, they'll do it, but they don't give a shit about the values or ideas pushed, they just care that it makes a buck. I just don't really understand when some people make it about how Hollywood is trying to shove a political agenda down their throats or how "in their time movies had more spine" or whatever thing about "everyone is offended now" anti-wokeness bullshit. It's just about money. It's not an affront to your values, it's no conspiracy, it's not personal: it's just trying to maximize profits and no matter how much you don't go to see "woke films" most people do and that's all Hollywood listens to. Soon as it stops being profitable, it'll move on to whatever new trend is and your kids will complain about it online too, remembering how in their days movies were great without whatever bullshit they think of next. Do these "really, really shoehorn it in" movies tend to suck? Sure. But is it wrong/unethical/worrisome/problematic? Nah.

That first one was especially spooky. What a load of rubbish! I'd rather watch paint dry. I loved this movie when it was called 'Leviathan... Amazon Rating: PG-13 Run time: 1 hour 41 minutes Stars: Tom Courtenay, Felicity Jones, Eddie Redmayne, Himesh Patel Director: Tom Harper En español, The Aeronauts isn't really historically accurate, but it does give you the most vivid sense imaginable for what it felt like to be British meteorological adventurers James Glaisher, then 53, and Henry Coxwell, 43, who barely escaped death in 1862 when they were the first humans to ride a hot-air balloon seven miles above the earth, where jets fly today and the air is minus 22 degrees. They had a smashing view — but Glaisher, making scientific notes about his skin turning funny colors, began to pass out from altitude sickness and tried to yell to Coxwell, only to discover that his mouth, arms and head wouldn't move, and his mind was freezing up, too. Thereby hangs a nail-biter of a tale, and director Tom Harper makes it a whooshing, pulse-pounding experience. Harper, whose recent Wild Rose is a must-see hit about a fiery Scottish singer, swaps out Coxwell for an imaginary, rich female aeronaut named Amelia Wren (Felicity Jones) with her The Theory of Everything star Eddie Redmayne as Glaisher. Jones character is inspired by French balloonist Sophie Blanchard, who favored elaborate costumes, plumed hats and nighttime flights with fireworks — which, unfortunately, ignited her balloon in 1819, killing her in a blaze of glory as she fell to earth, her white dress fluttering like angel wings. Other things happen to Amelia, whose flair for drama deepens the film's period-picture grandeur and plays well against Redmayne's nerdy scientist role. She does cartwheels to wow the crowd at their fateful launch as Glaisher, intent on using his various instruments to learn to predict the weather, shows more interest in the gizmos and pigeons he packs into their perilous basket. She tosses a dog out from 100 feet up, the crowd gasps — then the pooch's parachute opens and they laugh. Exciting sights, superb sound design and spectacular drama ensue. He's got one loyal friend ( Yesterday 's Himesh Patel, whose talent is wasted on a one-note role with dull dialogue) and a science academy full of upper-class twits who razz him for believing in the future of weather reports and flying men. Legendary Tom Courtenay, 82, plays his dementia-afflicted father whose cognition comes and goes. It's a touching performance, but the relationship feels tacked on to the story. Amelia's flashbacks involve her late husband (Vincent Perez, 55) who died in a ballooning accident that still messes with her irrationally guilty mind, as well as her traditionalist sister (Phoebe Fox) who thinks this aeronaut business is all nonsense and not fit for a proper lady. Their scenes fall to earth like the pigeon Glaisher sets free to fly at a great, inspiring height, only to watch in horror as it plunges like a rock. (That part really happened in 1862. ) But the aerial scenes that dominate the film do soar in wonderful ways, and there's real tension as dangers mount, tempers fray, fingers fumble, minds fade and ice relentlessly embraces the balloon and its pilots. It might have worked better to have them fall in love as they ascend to scary areas with clouds like mountains — since Amelia isn't real, why not? — but their quarrelsome-pal bonding works OK in dramatic terms, and these two retain the chemistry that made their Stephen Hawking film beloved. Jones is a beauty of rare intelligence and magnetism, and somebody should cast her in a great big action hit with her at its center. This isn't quite it, but it isn't half bad. It's in theaters for a couple weeks, and then streams on Amazon. If I were you, I'd watch it on a big screen while I had the chance. This looks amazing. If there's a chance, I'll gladly watch it in theatres. Just one thing: Please stop showing the highlights of the trailer before the actual trailer. I really hate that more and more studios do this. I get that peoples' attention span is getting shorter, but if they don't have the patience to spend two minutes on a trailer, they will never watch the whole movie anyway.

Movie Review: The Aeronauts' The hot air balloon movie The Aeronauts had NPR critic Bob Mondello clutching his armrests for dear life. MARY LOUISE KELLY, HOST: Actors Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones last teamed up for the film "The Theory Of Everything. It is an award-winning movie about physicist Stephen Hawking. Well, the stars are back together now in a film about another scientist, although our critic Bob Mondello says he found it hard to focus on the science in "The Aeronauts. " BOB MONDELLO, BYLINE: 1862 - a crowd has gathered in a London park to see the liftoff of a hot air balloon. A guy with lots of instruments is on board, and to his great annoyance, a showgirl has just cartwheeled in. But she's his pilot. (SOUNDBITE OF FILM, THE AERONAUTS" EDDIE REDMAYNE: As James Glaisher) The flight works (ph. FELICITY JONES: As Amelia Wren) Are you ready? REDMAYNE: As James Glaisher) Yes, I just need to retake my ground readings and then do one final check of the equipment. JONES: As Amelia Wren) Well, my equipment was all prepared in advance. Now, don't touch this rope, Mr. Glaisher, because it'll let out the gas. REDMAYNE: As James Glaisher) I do know how a balloon works. MONDELLO: She signals the ground crew... REDMAYNE: As James Glaisher) What are you doing? MONDELLO: leasing the ropes. JONES: As Amelia Wren) We fly. The sky awaits. REDMAYNE: As James Glaisher. Wait - no, these ground readings aren't... MONDELLO: The balloon is ascending majestically, as it's shot mostly from the ground at first. Then the point of view shifts, putting us in the basket with Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones, the ground receding below, she climbing into the rigging and pretending to slip. JONES: As Amelia Wren) Woo (ph. (SOUNDBITE OF CROWD GASPING) MONDELLO: And I start to realize something - my palms are sweating. It was a few minutes more before I started shrinking into the back of my seat, clutching at the armrest, as the filmmakers helpfully put altitude readings on screen - 1, 000 feet, 11, 000 feet. And it wasn't until the big storm hit... REDMAYNE: As James Glaisher) Wait - not one of my readings suggested a storm. JONES: As Amelia Wren) Well, that's what it is. MONDELLO. I started almost whimpering to myself, what are you doing here? You're afraid of heights. REDMAYNE: As James Glaisher) Don't worry - she's not made of conductive material so we won't attract lightning. JONES: As Amelia Wren) And if we are struck, the gas will explode. So we won't live long enough for... MONDELLO: Director Tom Harper has both of his stars leaning back against the sides of a wicker basket that seems just about high enough to trip them should they make a misstep, and they make plenty. Apparently, most of what happens in the film actually happened to balloon-atics (ph) back in the 1800s, though not all on one voyage. There's dramatic urgency to spare and not a lot of hot air when it comes to dialogue. And if you're like me, you'll be relieved that the filmmakers keep flashing back to events on the ground, which allows you to unclench a little. I won't make great claims for "The Aeronauts" as a drama about a pioneering meteorologist, but as a thrill ride, it's certainly effective on a big screen, which makes it sad that it's only going to be on a few big screens and only for a couple of weeks, before it starts streaming on Amazon. We'll need to get used to that, I suppose. Amazon has also released "The Report" this awards season. Netflix has "The Irishman" and "Marriage Story. All of those are intimate enough to work just fine on a home screen. "The Aeronauts. well, I cannot say strongly enough that if you can see it in IMAX, you should see it in IMAX, where if you're even a little bit afraid of heights, it will likely scare you shoutless (ph. If this is secretly a Cloverfield movie, Im going to lose my mind. The new LGBT-1000 model Terminator looks great. Terminator 7: Retirement Home. If the films love actually and life itself had a love child this would be it. Cloverfield universe? HMMMMM🤔. ΌλτμÎν Movie stream new albums.

Ladies and gentlemen, Stephen Hawking and Jane Wilde in a previous life

ĸåŒç¾Žçš„æç¾ Movie stream of consciousness. Greetings again from the darkness. 'Up, up, and away, in my beautiful balloon.' That song says nothing about a lack of oxygen (hypoxemia) a malfunctioning valve, or frost bite. all of which come into play in this story inspired by real life events of 1862 in London. Tom Harper directed the excellent WILD ROSE earlier this year, and for this one, he and his co-writer Jack Thorne (WONDER, 2017) base the story on both the real life record-breaking flight of scientist James Glaisher and balloon pilot Henry Coxwell, and Richard Holmes' book "Falling Upwards: How We Took to the Air.'
Reuniting from THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING (2014) where they played Stephen Hawking and wife Jane, are Eddie Redmayne (as scientist-with-a-chip James Glaisher) and Felicity Jones (as fictional balloon pilot Amelia Wren/Rennes. yes, naming your female pilot Amelia is so very creative. Courageous real life balloon pilot Henry Coxwell gets nary a mention here, as new world cinema must require a female lead or co-lead for every filmmaker not named Martin Scorsese. So, to heck with history, Amelia Wren is now the hero of this adventure!
As it turns out, Ms. Jones' character is the more interesting of the two. Amelia's initial showmanship catches nerdy Glaisher off-guard, though in fact, both are over-compensating. He, for his inferiority complex and the ridicule he endures from his fellow brainiacs at the Royal Society of London, and she for the tragic loss of her beloved husband in a balloon mishap. The mismatched pair are on a mission to fly higher than any human has previously flown, and in the process, allow Glaisher to record all the atmospheric readings possible in order to prove to the skeptics that meteorology is legitimate, and the weather can be predicted (although almost 160 years later, most weather reporters still haven't quite gotten the hang of it.
It's a tricky thing filming two characters who spend most of the movie floating tens of thousands of feet above ground in a wicker basket. The banter between the two should be crisp and the connection or disconnect should add intrigue. Here, the two characters are dwarfed by the giant balloon and the challenges that brings. What begins as an adventure morphs into a tale of survival. Storms, frostbite and technical issues provide the conflict. We do have flashbacks to background on both Amelia and Glaisher. Himesh Patel (star of this year's YESTERDAY) plays Glaisher's best friend, while Tom Courtenay and Anne Reid are Glaisher's parents. Vincent Perez appears as Amelia's husband Pierre.
I was fortunate enough to see this in a theatre and the big screen allows for the balloon effects to have full impact. There is no doubt that streaming this on your TV will not be as impressive. although anyone suffering from acrophobia will likely still experience some discomfort. The scenes in the balloon are thrilling, and Amelia's rescue mission up the ropes is stunning and beautifully filmed by cinematographer George Steel; however, the flashback scenes are quick to deflate the excitement. The upside here is that the English really did break the French record on the flight. even if the filmmaker had to bend history so Amelia could get credit.

Had a look for this series several years ago and gave up! Thank you Aeronaut Fan - memories flooding back from School Holidays many many years ago.
